AUKE SYBENGA’S UNIFORM

The jacket, kepi and saber of artilleryman Auke Sybenga are kept in this display case. His unit, 3-11-8 Regiment Artillery, was located between Veenendaal and Overberg. During the May days they supported the Dutch troops at Ederveen and Veenendaal with their 7-Field pieces.

The emblem and the gold trim

The uniform items shown were part of the ceremonial outfit. The emblem (dot) on the collar and the gold trim on the kepi show his rank: cornet. This was the lowest officer rank in the Dutch army.

Auke Sybenga

Auke Sybenga joined the Albrecht resistance group in 1944, for which he recorded troop movements and helped Allied soldiers find shelter in hiding places and return to their units. Auke was arrested in Veenendaal and deported via camp Amersfoort to Neuengamme concentration camp. He died in Wöbbelin subcamp at the age of 24.
